Detailed answers covering Moodle compatibility, deployment timelines, pricing approach, security posture, customisation scope, and support.
General
What is Quad, exactly?
Quad is a productised mobile app that sits on top of your existing Moodle deployment. We deliver a branded Android and iOS app to your students, talking to your Moodle through its REST API. We also offer two optional add-ons — a Student Application Portal for online admissions, and a Transcript Portal for verified academic records.
Who is Quad for?
Universities, colleges, training providers, government skill programmes, and corporate L&D teams that run Moodle and want their students to access it on a phone. Especially institutions in markets where students don't have laptops or reliable connectivity.
Who builds Quad?
Quad is a product of Quad — a software studio based in India that builds for institutions in emerging markets. We've shipped backends, mobile apps, and admin tools for universities, healthcare providers, and finance companies.
Moodle compatibility
Which Moodle versions does Quad support?
Moodle 3.9 LTS, 3.10, 3.11. Moodle 4.0, 4.1 LTS, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5. We talk to Moodle's standard REST API, so support carries forward as Moodle releases new versions. Moodle Workplace is supported on request.
Do we need to install a Moodle plugin?
In most cases, no. Quad uses Moodle's built-in REST web services. For some custom features (like deep links into specific quiz questions), we may install a small companion plugin — we ship the source and you control whether it goes live.
What about our existing Moodle plugins?
Standard Moodle plugins (forums, quizzes, assignments, lessons, books, URLs, files, folders, glossaries, choices) all work in the app. Niche plugins may need a small adapter. We assess this in the discovery call.
Can students use the official Moodle Mobile app instead?
They can — the official app is free and works. The difference is branding (Quad is fully white-labelled to your institution, the official app is Moodle-branded) and customisation (the official app's UI is fixed, Quad's is tailored to your workflows and visual identity). For institutions where brand matters, Quad is the answer.
Deployment
How long does deployment take?
A standard Moodle Mobile App deployment goes from kick-off to a production app published in your store accounts in 14 working days. Each add-on module (Application Portal, Transcript Portal) adds 2–4 weeks.
What do you need from us to get started?
Your Moodle URL and version. Admin access to a staging copy of Moodle (or production, your call). SSO configuration details. Your logo, primary brand color, and a one-paragraph app store description. Access to your Google Play and Apple Developer accounts (or we can publish under ours initially and transfer later).
Can we self-host?
Yes. Quad's backend ships as a Docker stack and can run on your own infrastructure, a regional cloud provider, or our managed cloud. Universities with data-residency requirements typically self-host; those without one let us manage it.
Who owns the app on App Store and Play Store?
You do. Quad publishes the app under your institution's developer account. Your name in the store, your logo, your privacy policy. Even if you stop working with us tomorrow, the app is yours.
Pricing
How much does Quad cost?
Pricing depends on student count, which modules you need (core, +Application Portal, +Transcript Portal), and hosting choice (self-hosted vs managed). Send us your details and we'll quote within one working day.
Is there a setup fee?
Yes — a one-time deployment fee covers the 14-day build and store publication. After that, a flat annual or monthly fee covers hosting (if managed), maintenance, security patches, and minor updates.
Do you charge per student?
No per-student fees. Pricing is in bands by institution size (under 1,000 students, 1,000–5,000, 5,000–15,000, 15,000+). You won't get a surprise invoice if enrolments grow mid-year.
Security
How is student data secured?
Passwords are hashed with Argon2id. Personal access tokens to Moodle are encrypted at rest using ASP.NET Data Protection. All communication uses TLS 1.3. Admin actions are recorded in an immutable audit log. Access to production systems is restricted to a small audited group of engineers.
Where is data stored?
Wherever you choose. Self-hosting puts everything on your own servers. Managed deployments default to the cloud region nearest your students (Mumbai, Frankfurt, Singapore, Cape Town, etc.). You always own the data.
Are you GDPR / DPDP / FERPA compliant?
Quad is built to be compliant with GDPR, India's DPDP Act, and FERPA. Compliance ultimately depends on how you configure and operate the system. We provide the DPA, security documentation, and audit logs your legal team needs.
How does the AI handle student data?
Quad's AI features run on AWS Bedrock in your chosen AWS region. The model does not train on student submissions, conversations, or grades — Bedrock's terms guarantee that. We use retrieval-augmented generation, which means the AI only ever sees the specific course content needed to answer a question, not your full Moodle. Every AI prompt is recorded in an audit log. Institutions can disable any AI feature globally, by course, or by user role. If your data residency rules forbid AI processing, you can run Quad with AI turned off entirely.
Customisation
Can we customise the UI?
Within reason. We adjust your logo, colors, splash screen, app icon, and copy. We don't ship entirely custom UI builds per institution — that doesn't scale and increases maintenance cost for everyone. If you need something genuinely custom, we'll quote it as a separate engagement.
Can we add features?
Yes. Custom features are quoted separately. Common requests we've delivered: alumni directory, transport tracking, hostel allocation, attendance with NFC card readers. If you can describe it, we can scope it.
Can we integrate with our existing finance system?
Yes. ERPNext, Tally, SAP, Oracle EBS, custom in-house — if it has an API, we can integrate it. Common use cases are fee statements in the mobile app and application fee payments through the Application Portal.
Support
What's included in support?
Standard support covers bug fixes, security patches, OS-update compatibility, store-policy compliance, and platform updates as Android/iOS evolve. Includes email support with one-business-day response. Phone and chat support available on premium plans.
What if there's an outage?
For managed deployments, we operate 24/7 monitoring with a 1-hour response SLA for P1 incidents. For self-hosted deployments, your team is on the front line and we provide an escalation path within 2 business hours. We publish a status page for managed customers.
What if we want to leave Quad?
You keep your data, your developer accounts, and your app listings. We provide a full data export in standard formats. We don't lock you in — your Moodle was always the source of truth, Quad is just the mobile experience layer.
